It has been generations since the fall of humanity's great civilization. No one remembers what happened—there are no stories or legends. It simply died, and nobody really cared. The ancients built a paradise, only to burn it all down.
Nature has reclaimed much of the world. Humanity has begun to reconquer the wild frontier, building new towns and communities linked together by the broken remnants of ancient roads and highways. But these towns are rough and wild, filled with corrupt justice, violence, greed, and brutality.
Some farmers, ranchers, and small settlements come together for survival. Then there are the drifters, wanderers, and outlaws who roam the ancient roads. Some are bandits, marauders, and criminals. Others are simply nomads, explorers—people who just want to live free. They are known as The Highwaymen.
Each story stands on its own and explores different genres and themes. I don't want to lock these stories into any particular genre or ongoing theme.
However, they tend toward western and gothic stories that will often incorporate any of the following additional themes:
Yes, and no.
These stories are set in a post-apocalyptic world that resembles the early 1800s. It has been several generations since the collapse of modern society. The current population doesn't even know how the world collapsed. Nature has reclaimed much of the world. The ruins of the great cities are avoided for mysterious reasons. Communities now resemble frontier towns. Ranches and farms are common, and people generally have their own systems of justice and accountability. The remains of the old highways are still used by wanderers, nomads, bandits, and outlaws.
Folklore, magic, and the supernatural were still a part of the world of the Old West. In any part of the world of the 1800s you could find people who believed that ghosts, magic, witches, vampires, werewolves, and other elements of the supernatural were very real. The world of The Highwaymen resembles that world. Except, in some of the stories, some of it is very real.
In any order you choose. These stories often share characters, places, and even events. However, they are not meant to be read in any order. At no point will reading one story be mandatory for the enjoyment of another. So, pick up whatever stories speaks to you, enjoy it, and hopefully that story will inspire you to read more.
